Is there a weight limit on flight attendants?

If you consider yourself to be Plus-size, it’s not impossible to become a flight attendant. In the past several years, airlines in the U.S. have become more flexible when it comes to their applicants. But that doesn’t mean that their company image isn’t important to them! As a Plus-sized applicant, you have to present yourself as a professional.

More than everyone else, the first impression you give to the interviewer is going to be the deciding factor. So you need to make sure that your outfit and makeup looks fantastic.

Requirements for height and weight

When it comes to the requirements for height and weight for plus sized flight attendants, there are a few things to consider.

FAA requirements

The FAA does not have any specific requirements that regulate how heavy a flight attendant can be.

The FAA sets minimum standards for the physical ability of flight attendants, including the ability to perform emergency duties, reach overhead compartments, and lift and move equipment, but it does not specify a specific weight requirement.

But airlines may have their own rules

It is up to each individual airline to determine its own physical requirements for flight attendants, within the limits set by the FAA. Some airlines may have more flexible requirements, while others may have more stringent standards. Generally, airlines prefer flight attendants who are within a healthy weight range for their height (BMI).

You will need to have a healthy BMI. Here is a link to a BMI calculator.

Airline policies

Airlines are getting more flexible

Some U.S. airlines have made changes to their hiring process to allow the inclusion of plus-sized flight attendants in the past 20 years.

These hiring changes can include changes to their uniform sizes and the physical requirements for flight attendants. However, the specifics of these changes vary between airlines. So it is important to check with each airline for their specific policies and requirements.

Many airlines focus on the ability of the flight attendant to perform the physical requirements of the job, rather than a specific weight limit. As long as the candidate is able to perform their duties safely and effectively they will be considered.

The requirements for height and weight for plus sized flight attendants may vary from airline to airline. So airline policies could include restrictions on body size, but these are typically not considered to be weight limits.

For example, some airlines say that crew members must fit into the jump seat using the harness (seat belt) without an extension and must fit easily through the over wing exit.

What are recruiters looking for?

They are looking for someone that has customer service experience, has that “can-do” attitude, and a contagious smile, caring, and empathetic.

Someone they know will take great care of our customers.

In addition, they are looking for someone that is fit enough to get through a long day. Which will include being on your feet for long periods of time, able to lift luggage into the upper storage bins, and having enough energy to get through the day.

Airline policies may be in flux

Airlines may be making changes to their hiring practices in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, so it is best to check with each airline for their current policies and requirements.

I found that a good source for this information are sites like Reddit or Quora. I have found that many flight attendants post on Quora. Post a question, make it clear you’re interested in becoming a flight attendant. You may be surprised to find a senior flight attendant is answering your question!

The medical exam

Medical person

A medical exam is a standard part of the flight attendant hiring process, and it is designed to assess the overall health and fitness of the candidate to ensure they can perform the physical demands of the job. There is no need to avoid or look out for anything specific during the medical exam. As a plus-sized individual, it is important to approach the medical exam with the same level of preparation and professionalism as any other candidate.

In terms of specific health concerns for plus-sized individuals, some common conditions that may impact the ability to perform the physical demands of the job include obesity, joint pain, and respiratory issues. These conditions can be managed with proper treatment and medication.

Because of this, it’s recommended to inform the examining doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions and to be honest and forthcoming about any health concerns you may have. The doctor will take these factors into consideration when evaluating your fitness for the job.

Tips on how plus-sized applicants should dress for the interview

The airline recruiters can be brutal when it comes to the way you look. So if you are a bit heavy, make sure you go into the interview looking well put together.

For ladies:

  1. Choose clothing that fits well: Make sure that your clothing fits properly and is not too tight or too loose. Clothing that is too tight can be uncomfortable and unflattering, while clothing that is too loose can make you look bigger than you are.
  2. Opt for tailored pieces: Tailored pieces, such as blazers and trousers, can create a sleek and polished look that is professional and appropriate for a flight attendant interview.
  3. Wear well-fitted shoes: Choose shoes that fit properly and are comfortable for walking and standing. Avoid shoes with high heels that may be uncomfortable. If you do wear a shoe with a heel, keep the heel at 2 inches or lower.
  4. Accessorize appropriately: Keep accessories to a minimum and choose items that complement your outfit, such as a simple necklace or scarf, earrings, and a nice bag would be nice.
  5. Consider the dress code: Research the dress code for the airline you are interviewing with and make sure that your outfit meets their standards. Some airlines may have specific requirements for attire during the interview process.

Overall, it’s important to dress professionally and appropriately for your flight attendant interview. Choose clothing that fits well, is comfortable, and meets the standards of the airline you are interviewing with.

For guys:

  1. Wear a suit: A suit is the most professional attire for a flight attendant interview. Choose a well-fitted suit in a neutral color, such as black, navy, or gray.
  2. Pay attention to fit: Make sure that your suit fits properly and is not too tight or too loose. Opt for a suit that is tailored to your body shape and flatters your physique.
  3. Wear a dress shirt: Choose a dress shirt in a neutral color, such as white or light blue. The shirt should be well-fitted and tucked into your trousers.
  4. Choose polished shoes: Choose dress shoes in a neutral color, such as black or brown, that are in good condition and polished.

You will want to sell yourself

You’ll need to do research on the company you’re applying to. Each company is different, see if you can determine what some of their key qualities they are looking for. Or put another way, what is their crew member ‘culture’ like? What are their values? What kind of flight attendant are they looking for?

  • First place to look is the job posting
  • Then look on sites like Quora or Reddit for posts from people who recently went through an interview.
  • Post a question. There are many Flight attendants that post on these sites. You may get lucky and have a senior Flight Attendant answering your question!

There are some key qualities that all airlines look for in a Flight Attendant, such as:

  • Positive attitude
  • Good customer service skills
  • The ability to work under pressure
  • Being flexible / being able to think on your feet
  • And a good level of physical fitness. You’re fit enough to be on your feet for 10+ hours and still have some energy left.

Now sell yourself

How do you sell yourself?

It’s not unusual for a salesman to position their product or service as a solution to a problem.

So the airline has a problem, you’re the solution.

Now you have a good idea of what the airline is looking for, make sure you highlight those qualities in your resume and in the interview.

Do your research, make sure you have an idea of the possible questions that you may be asked. Click here for some questions and answers!

Use your answers as a way to promote your qualities that would make you a great flight attendant.

  • Take a look at the job description and match your qualities with what the company is looking for.
  • When answering, be specific when talking about your qualities. Give examples of how you used them and how they helped you
  • Use positive words such as ‘reliable’, ‘hardworking’, ‘resourceful’, etc…

And the interview is a great place to show that you understand the role of a Flight Attendant and that you’re up for the challenge.

What you should not do!

  • DON’T use cliches! DO NOT SAY “I’m a people person”!
  • DO NOT LIE! The company will hire people to do research on you. You will be caught and you won’t get the job!

Advice for plus sized applicants

  1. Embrace Your Unique Qualities: Embrace your individuality and focus on your strengths, such as your friendly personality, strong communication skills, and ability to work well under pressure.
  2. Focus on the ability to perform the physical requirements: The ability to perform the physical demands of the job, such as reaching overhead compartments and lifting equipment, is the most important consideration for airlines when hiring flight attendants. Be confident in your ability to perform these duties. You will have to demonstrate them during training!
  3. Build Body Positivity and Confidence: Focus on developing a positive self-image, and work on building confidence in your abilities and appearance. Surround yourself with supportive people and engage in activities that make you feel good about yourself.
  4. Stay Healthy and Hydrated: Focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including eating nutritious foods, staying hydrated, and engaging in regular physical activity. This will help you feel your best and be better prepared for the physical demands of the job.
